The Teacher and the Artist

A workhop on the art of visual storytelling
Stephanie de Rouge
Mary Miss

Here I’ve captured Stephanie in her art of teaching visual storytelling, ever attentive to her students, moving into the shadows, searching for the light, focused on the needs of each individual in the midst of the chaos around us, passionately sharing her gifts with the class.

Mary and Stephanie meet at the 14th street station for the first time and our journey continues with Stephanie teaching her 5 minute portrait, the importance of getting to know and capture your subject to tell the story. Mary guides us through her art at the station expressing her love for the old detail, art and craftsmanship and the disdain for the advertising and sterility of modern renovations.

Mary’s art is all around us at the 14th street station yet the world rushes past without seeing. A portrait of Mary standing in her art, framed in red, then reflecting back on the days when art and architecture were one. The beauty of Mary and her art is in the attempt to preserve the art and beauty that was already there before renovation made it all disappear for the sake of progress and advertising.
